You pronounce O as "oh" in don't, done, and doubt?

I'm also intrigued, how do you pronounce these Walker? O.o

They use the present tense for present & future.

... this was an argument?

It was well on its way to being one. "English is easier!" no, "Japanese is!"

Let's see... don't=oh, done=dun, doubt=ow. Okay, so I lied to myself. Bite me.

But still, there's a difference-- english makes do with 26 letters, vs. 40-whatever in Japanese. Instead of having one sound for each letter, we combine letters for different sounds. I don't know that's really more difficult. It could be, I suppose.

To all staff: What subjects did you choose at college (and university if applicable) and why?
Didn't go to Uni because I really wasn't interested but at college I did A-Level Media Studies, Classical Civilisation, Sociology and the epic joke which is General Studies.

Chose Media because it looked interesting, chose Sociology because it was an easy A, chose Classics because it was a requirement to have at least 3 A-Level subjects and it seemed the lesser of all the available evils and everyone had to do General Studies as part of a guinea pig project by whoever is in charge of education in this country. It asked stupid questions like "if you could invent a household machine, what would it be and what would it do?" - and yes, every single person failed it. What they examiners were looking for exactly I have no idea as surely an imaginary machine can't be "failed". But there you go...

That's because Japanese isn't an alphabet, it's a syllabary.

Am I a dbag?

Re: Ask The Staff 'Anything'

I don't know - are you? and if so, what has brought you to that conclusion?

DAMNIT I WASN'T GOING TO ARGUE AND NOW I AM.

Exactly, and that means it's harder to learn than English-- 40-some symbols that are each only used in once circumstance vs. 26 symbols that are used in more than one circumstance but are generally pretty easy to learn to write, even if pronunciation is a *****.

Here's my question for the all-knowing staff: will I get into the Coast Guard Academy? Keep in mind, I will hold you responsible if you're wrong. Or I don't get in.

And now I really need to get to class. I have 50 minutes to drive thirty minutes and walk twenty minutes, which really leaves ya winded, donchyaknow?

Re: Ask The Staff 'Anything'

Hmm...will you get into the Coast Guard Academy?....er... dunno.

Does that help?

Re: Ask The Staff 'Anything'

According to my Oracle Interpretation Guide, Angelic Messenger Edition, Chapter 7, Forum Divination, that translates as "certainly, possibly, if you're lucky." Damnit. What's with these modern soothsayers? Can't they be more precise?

You're still incorrect, Hiragana & Katakana are used in multiple circumstances (I can tell that you're just making guesses, Walker). They have 46 characters but Hiragana & Katakana are used for sounds not whole words. Include Kanji into the mix, and the Japanese writing system becomes very difficult to learn and master, just like the Chinese writing system (which it was taken from). I also get the feeling you've never written a Kana character before, ever. It is understandable that someone doesn't know how difficult a language is if it is their native/first language.

I probably should have also mentioned that I was referring to Romaji when I was speaking of alphabets in Japanese.

I wasn't researching anything because I'm trying not to argue and then I can't resist but now I'm trying to stop even though it seems you just admitted that English is easier. (Imagine all that in one breath, please.)

If.. if it helps to keep you from losing control.. I could lie to myself and agree with you.

Seriously though, Walker. If you can't handle this simple debate, say so and I can just drop it.

I'm not saying it's easy to learn. They're both stupid languages.

Re: Ask The Staff 'Anything'

"Can't handle this simple debate?" Wow, that sounds incredibly patronizing and obnoxious. Congrats. You got that across very well in text.

Possibly you are misinterpreting my comments. I. Do. Not. Want. To. Argue. This. Point. I like arguing, quite frequently, but I can't handle more than one pointlessly unsolvable argument of opinion at once. I already have one going, and that's enough. Plus, I have very little interest in linguistics, beyond a slight desire to learn Spanish.

(Note: Please don't try to claim it as anything but an argument of opinion. "Easier" and "harder" are not quantifiable values, and are entirely relative to who's doing the comparing and what's being compared.)

Trust me when I say I was not trying to be condescending towards you, I apologize if I offended you. It just appears as if you were overreacting to all of this. I'm in disagreement with you throwing guesses around and making claims of something you don't know much about (which you already admitted), I wouldn't argue over what's easier & harder as I'm fully aware that it comes down to the learning curve of the task.
