Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

In the fantasy world of animated ninja warriors, the superheroes sometimes slip away from bad guys by hiding in the sand.

No superhero could rescue a 10-year-old Everett boy who died Monday after trying to recreate the trick.

Codey Porter apparently was mimicking Japanese anime superheroes Saturday when he asked friends to bury him in a backyard sandbox. He stopped breathing.

The fifth-grader died Monday afternoon at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle.

"He passed peacefully, with his family at his side," the boy's family said in a statement released late Monday. "We appreciate all the support and prayers that we have received. We have decided to honor Codey's memory by making him an organ donor, and a miracle for another family."

Codey was a bright, imaginative boy with many friends, said Patricia Gauksheim, principal at Silver Firs Elementary School, where Codey was a student.

Snohomish County sheriff's detectives determined Saturday's incident was a tragic accident, spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.

Codey was playing with five other children in a friend's back yard Saturday when he was buried, Hover said.

Playmates told adults the boy was recreating a scene from "Naruto," a popular Japanese animated cartoon show, said Joshua Quantrille, 30, Codey's half brother. One character, Gaara of the Sand, fights by immobilizing opponents in the sand.

When the other children realized something was wrong, they pulled Codey out, Hover said. Adults performed CPR until aid arrived. The boy was whisked to an Everett hospital and later flown by helicopter to Children's.
this just proves the saying, "dont try this at home". sad news tho. im just waiting for the parents to sue the Naruto creators...although, i dont think they will, the way they seemed in the article.

Darwinism at work here people. Seriously.

Sue? Sue for what? For having a stupid child?

Re: Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

Codey was a bright, imaginative boy

Seems the 2nd part was much more true than the first part.

Re: Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

^ Agreed. Though I do feel rather sorry for the child ... stupid people do stupid things.

Now that is funny. Well pointed out, Darkie. +rep

Re: Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

I remember when I was 10...and even though I wasn't that imaginative----WAIT ONE SECOND! Imaginative? This kid was addicted to Naruto, being imaginative is to create a plane out of ice cubes or something.

But still, I feel sorry for him. Though it didn't seem "imaginative"....it seemed "explorative". Sorry for the caps and madness, but I don't get how people can be so addicted to something so small. I mean...Naruto? He buried himself in the sand? 10 years old?

Gaara, when I saw him, was not fighting opponents "IN THE SAND", I think he used the sand as a defense (like a shield or giant arm...I think that's what it was). This child got the bright idea to bury himself in the sand, since he was too young to realize that "maybe" he could just put sand on his body.

And what do they plan to do by mentioning Naruto? What will they sue them for?

"Hey! You're show made my son bury himself in the sand!"

It's not like, during Naruto they put in the middle of the episode: "Here's a nice trick: bury yourself in the sand!"

Kids pretending to be Pokemons and leaping of their houses and tumbling to their deaths and now this. One can only wonder what would happen if these kids didn't waste themselves and got into more adult stuff when they got older.

The Gears of War chainsawing death comes to mind. Hmmm...

Re: Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

Must... resist... from being... a... super asshole!

Argh! I... I can't stop myself!

*Howls and writhes much like a man turning into a Balverine*

Totally freaking pwnd! Ah, well it looks like the gene pool has been cleansed further. This kid deserves a Darwin Award. All respect to the family, and while the kid need not die, he did anyway through simple stupidity. I have little pity for people who get injured or killed doing something so stupid.

Re: Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

Oh my dear Fablefreak, I'm glad we're are in agreement on this one.

My little brother is nine years old, and I am quite certain what the answer would be if I asked if I could bury him in a sandbox.

Re: Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

i noticed the whole "imaginative" thing too. i was talking to my friend Elliott about it. and i pointed it out. just goes to show you, ppl do stupid things, like this

YouTube - fat kid tries to jump off roof

Re: Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

being imaginative is to create a plane out of ice cubes or something.

I think you mean creative

That was pretty stupid though... What could you gain from being buried in sand??

Re: Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

I can feel the compassion in this room.....

Re: Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

There is so much of it...compassion...

Re: Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

One would also hope that stupid people would not hang around.... other stupid people.... Not one of the other FIVE children stopped to say "leave a hole so he can breathe." And they were ten? Did they live here on planet earth their whole lives or were they just visiting? It is sad that someone so young had to die.... but perhaps some genius will need one of his organs and grow up to cure cancer. That would be a death well served.

Honestly, what are people teaching their kids these days? And why was no one watching them?

The decline of intelligence of the human race sickens me. Not to sound like horrible person (let's be honest, though, I am:P) but I think it would be great if we could breed stupid out...... Someone should figure that problem out.....

Re: Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

I honestly dont think a ten year old would have the sense to think that far ahead. I feel sorry for him. If it had been an adult though....

It would have been even more funny :w00t:

You all have serious issues. Death is never anything to laugh about, including that of a kid. Kids that young are impressionable, and they have yet to experience enough of life to resist most urges that seem "stupid". Nobody can be blamed for this; the kid just wanted to do something cool that he saw, it happened to all of us when we were younger.

Re: Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

I was all ready to come in hear and post a Darwin award comment but this made me sad. Everyone knows that you can't breath under water but not everyone (obviously) knows that you can't breath underground.
I wonder how deep the kid was. I guess my being a parent took over after reading that. Life is so fragile :'(

There's a fine line between being aware that burying yourself in sand completely will kill you, and believing you can pop out the sand like a ninja on the very first try without any practice whatsoever.

I was very curious and imaginative when I was 10 years old, but I wasn't a fool... I had enough sense to know that being buried or jumping off a 2-3 story roof could kill me. I'm sure everyone else in this thread/forum would agree when it comes to that as well.

Re: Child Dies form Recreating Scene a Japanese Anime Scene

Thats sad man, real sad, that a kid has to go be a superhero
