FPS Suggestions?

Okay, I'm in the market for a shooter, I have not played a shooter since well before the first Halo was released. I played Unreal Tournament on the computer as a kid and LOVED IT man - but I got out of the genre and haven't played one since. Now I'm kinda craving one...was gonna pick up UT 3 for the 360 (I only have a 360 btw, please limit suggestions to the 360) but I heard not many people play it online anymore.
Now I'm not big on Halo at all - not at all, in fact I've never even been the slightest bit interested in it. This is because I'm kinda a stubborn guy and try to avoid the MOST popular games, and nobody shuts up about Halo. BUT, I AM OPEN to it as a suggestion, so please, for you Halo fans, please tell me if you think I would like Halo 3 or not. Again, I loved UT back in the day, never played a Halo game before - like what's the big deal about the series, why is it sooooo popular?
I was also thinking about Gears of War 2. I know it's not an FPS but I honestly think GoW2 looks like my kinda game - moreso than Halo, but I'm not sure...I mean it's full price and Halo 3 is down in price, and right now Gamestop is having that big sale and whatnot...

So basically, for someone who's been out of the shooters for several years, what would you recommend? Halo, GoW2, something else maybe?

I never really seen why Halo 3 was so awesome. It has fun stuff, and some cool custom maps from other people, but really isn't all what it is supposed to be.

I would suggest Call of Duty 4, and Call of Duty: World at War. I personally prefer 4 over WaW, but you know how everyone wants the new one, and never the old one.

Oh ok, I forgot all about call of duty...so tell me...like I watched my buddy play CoD 4 and I thought it looked SWEET man. Do you know if a lot if people are usually playing it online still, or have they gone over to the new one? Cause you just sparked an interest in me with CoD4...

One thing though, how hard is it? Like for someone who hasn't played an FPS in so long, how hard would it be to learn? Reason I ask is I remember it looking very in depth, very intricate...very military! :ninja:

It can get slightly hard to get used to with all those jerks who think they are cool for playing 15 hours a day on it :lol: And I believe there are still 50000 people who play CoD 4 when I checked, which was when WaW came out. And 150000 people were playing WaW. CoD 4 is my absolute favourite Xbox 360 game ever. So many great times I have had on it. No other game will be the same.

Well man...not because you're the only person to respond so far, but because you've struck a chord in me that really resonates...I may just get CoD4! It definitely looks better than Halo 3! I'm diggin' this idea...

Sure. ^_^. And Left 4 Dead is pretty fun, but co-op story can only go so far. Hopefully I get my Xbox back soon... Sent it out exactly 1 week ago. Hopefully within the next week I get it back.

I would like to check my repair status online, but I need the serial code that was ON THE XBOX that I sent in...

If you want you could do my interviews for me tomorrow, write a ten page paper on sunday about them, and spend each day next week studying for a final exam for me! Guaranteed 0% boredom!

Well Skotekal, after watching the IGN video review I'm sold on CoD4, probably trading some games in for it tomorrow. So when you get your system back, you'll have shooting a noob to look forward to

try Half-Life 2... or Star Wars: Republic Commando... HL2 has in my opinion more awesome replayability and fun characters... yet SW:RC has funner characters and a better squad AI (as in your HL2 squad near the end of the game is practically a retarded gunslinger while your RP squad seems more intelligent and assist each other... RP AI shoots at the most lethal enemy but also gives a little ammo for the small guys... while HL2 AI concentrates on trying to shoot the butterfly that landed on your back.) I personally love both games for different reasons... CoD: 4 is great and so is Halo 3... and I cant think of any others right now sorry...

Thanks for all the suggestions L. I'm set on CoD4 for now. If I really like it then I may look into some of those others later on, too!

I LOVE that CoD4 has no vehicles, I hate those things in FPS games. *shivers*
But I'm really afraid I'll just suck, well of course I will at first but I mean I dunno if I'll be able to get good at all...it looks SO intense.

^it is... very intense, but it is very fun... 3 tips:
1. go for good accuracy and penetration weapons
2. dont even think that one or even 2 walls is cover from your enemy they can shoot straight through them with any gun worth its weight
3. use the Juggernaut (for protection), Steady aim (for accuracy) and Martydom (for annoying people to death... litterally) specials

fracture or GoW 2? sure theyre not fps's but they involve guns and shooting them! battlefield...is that any good? if so why not that one? so many choices, just go nuts! finish one game and exchange them until you find the right one

Call Of Duty 4 is the game that got me playing on Live a lot and is the only game to get me to play on Live so much so far on 360. Also Left 4 Dead as Tsuyu said would be an excellent choice. Id highly recommend both games and will be getting Left 4 Dead next. Call Of Duty World At War is good but it does not have the polish that COD 4 does and the weapons just dont feel right and some are quite imbalanced. Good game but dont think its as good as COD 4 and most my friends have told me they will go back to COD 4 soon.

Quite right, quite right. Not that the Co-op mode is bad either. We spent like 8 or so hours last night trying to beat one of the 4 campaigns on Expert... bloody impossible. And we were 4 good human players, but the zombies shamed us all. :lol:
