Halloween is sorta frowned upon here in Sweden because it collides with a holiday where we think of our dead loved ones. Its hardly appropriate to dress up as the undead around that time.

Just out of curiosity, is that in any way related to the Day of the Dead holiday celebrated in Latin American countries on November 1st and 2nd? I know Sweden is quite far away from Latin America, but their holiday and yours sound exactly the same.

To answer: Almost certainly yes. All the remembrance-of-the-dead holidays around that time in all the European and former colonial countries are almost certainly related, at least if I had to guess.

It is the Protestant equivilant of the Catholic holiday of All Souls Day. El Día de los Muertos is probably the original Catholic holiday, but with a Latin twist on it. So yes, they are related, if not the same thing.

Yeah, I think that the Day of the Dead has elements from preexisting native traditions, but I could be wrong.

And yeah, All Soul's Day is actually celebrated here... but in no major way. And I'm not Catholic.

That sounds horrible. Absolutely horrible.

The night before wasn't that bad. Had to hitch a lift half way back home and walk the rest. Took about three hours...
