Re: Language Filter

Oh great, the Super Spam Brothers are back. Can someone make a sub-forum for all their bitching so they stop polluting everything else?

And I personally don't care about cussing, but it's good for keeping time wasters away.

Re: Language Filter

Why are people afraid of a few words? Dog is a word too. Why isn't it taboo? Why don't we just ban all words. I find them all offensive and regard them as an insult to my very existence.

I voted no, but I would definitely settle for an account specific on/off switch for it. Server allowing, of course.

Can admins/mods see the words unbleeped?

Re: Language Filter

If it's simply down to spam bots, then I don't see any reason (apart from server allowance) for there not to be a system with a simple on/off switch for the filter. If not logged in, it is automatically on so bot's can't read it. If the admins (and I'm assuming it works this way) can see the words unbleeped, then it shouldn't be too taxing for the server to simply extend that privelage.

Re: Language Filter

I think if ANY of us can see the words, the bots can see them.

Re: Language Filter

The bots will be searching for that word, and I think any page ever viewed on here witht he word on will come up.

You'd assume the admins can see it though? We need confirmation.

Re: Language Filter

Maybe it depends on the default settign when a guest views the forum.

You love it - don't pretend you don't

As for the swear filter, well the reasons for having it in place have been more than covered on a number of occasions, but one of the biggest reasons is this:

If someone has parental controls or specific filters in place to prevent them/their kids from viewing sites with certain content in, it means that if the filter is disabled, a whole bunch of potential visitors will not be able to access the site (depending on the censorship parameters of their filter/block) and we lose traffic. This is not good.

Making the filter optional is not possible - it's all or nothing.

As far as I'm concerned, reading the moronic ramblings of a (usually) teenage idiot who thinks that swearing somehow elevates them to god-like status is not what I want to have to read. If you have to use profanity then you haven't heard of a thesaurus. Cursing is the language choice of the degenerate...

So there's no way to make sure you're not broadcasting the naughty words to the web for the search engines/filters/bots to pick up? Make it, say, a Premium member, on request thing perhaps?

And can the admins see the words in their unaltered state?

This is where my main problem lies. I'm aware that some people (ironically enough, the younger members) enjoy a swear. Surely we're mature enough to be able to ignore their swearing rather than just erasing that word from existence, which is more "god like" anyway? Thinking you're above using "common" language. Sorry Mrs Windsor, but thats stupid.

And besides, sometimes there are no other words that can express your feelings as efficiently or effectively as ****, or ****. Or even ****. I know this isn't a democracy or anything, but I know that you guys like to try to be fair at least, and no one likes being censored.

Nope - what is starred is starred. We can't see it any more than you guys can.

"Mrs Windsor"? Excuse me? You really don't need to take that tone with me, you know. There's no call for it. Don't call me stupid.

So.... if even the Admins can't see it, then the bots can't see it?

Re: Language Filter

Yup - bots can't see it either. Doesn't stop them posting, mind, but far fewer bots do it than if we uncensored a lot of the words on our list.

It also stops people using curse words as a way of flaming each other. Kind of loses its edge when you write a foul-mouthed tirade at someone on the forums and all that comes out is a bunch of twinkly stars...

So less swearing = less bots? I don't think that would work because there is going to be some idiot who goes "**** ***** ****ing ****!" (no those aren't swears. their real stars) attracting more bots.

Oh noes I set myself up for a flame by an "uber" member.

Re: Language Filter

I didn't explain meself all too well there - the stars do not attract the bots. They see stars, it means nothing. I could make an entire thirty page thread of stars and it wouldn't necessarily increase the bot activity one jot. We get spam because sites just do - we have advanced filters in place, extra security and whanot but it does not fully stop spam. But because we have the swear filter in place it reduces the amount we get because the bots don't have any words to latch onto. Most porn spam contains curse words in the titles they use so they get filtered instantly so you guys don't see it (for the most part - those with porn links in their sig or something can get through from time to time). If you see any bots, they are most likely going to be Nokia adverts or some brand of footwear/bag/clothes. As it is, our software is still very good - but we are limited to what the software can do. If it doesn't offer something, we can't use it.

Basically, we have to wait for updated spam blocker whatchamacallems?

Re: Language Filter

Yeah...and then watch as it works perfectly for about three days until a bot gets through or someone figures out how to bypass it and then the race is on for a new filter to be created.

There will be spam for as long as the internet exists, I should imagine. Just have to do what we can to try and reduce the amount that gets through.

Ok, maybe I went a bit over the top with that one. Sorry bout that. I stand by the argument though.

And I was calling the idea stupid, not you personally.

As we have said numerous times, its not about censoring members. Its about censoring some content to stop it causing big spam problems and us being blocked by certain search engines and parental controlled computers and such for explicit content. We have to deal with enough on a day to day basis as it is. I must remove well over 200 a day from all our sites with the content we have originally. If everyone starting going around using bad language then the forums would light up like a beacon for even more spam bots to swarm here. The odd few smarter ones slip through our filter too and manage to post on the boards. Wouldnt want a really explicit porn bot getting through and posting graphic images everywhere that the younger minority could see and the easily offended older ones too.
