As we have said numerous times, its not about censoring members. Its about censoring some content to stop it causing big spam problems and us being blocked by certain search engines and parental controlled computers and such for explicit content. We have to deal with enough on a day to day basis as it is. I must remove well over 200 a day from all our sites with the content we have originally. If everyone starting going around using bad language then the forums would light up like a beacon for even more spam bots to swarm here. The odd few smarter ones slip through our filter too and manage to post on the boards. Wouldnt want a really explicit porn bot getting through and posting graphic images everywhere that the younger minority could see and the easily offended older ones too.

I completely understand that, and I'm now going to drop the argument.

I'm sorry to have caused offence to you Sharon. I got cought up in the moment.

Anyone who knows me outside the forums knows im quite well known for my outspoken attitude and views so bad language and such doesnt bother me in slightest. However its not an intelligent way to communicate and wouldnt make the forums look too attractive. My main reason for liking the language filter is to put it bluntly, less work for me and thats a good thing . However i know what you were trying to say about censorship.

Re: Language Filter

Well, in a nutshell:

The filter stops the spam bots from seeing those words. Spam bots are attracted to these words, so having the filter means less cleanup work for the admins/mods.

No need to apologise to me :)

Swearing doesn't offend me, as such, as it's everywhere, pretty much (ooh, that sort of rhymed). I just don't like having to read it when it can be starred out instead - on a forum it's just not really necessary as everyone has the opportunity to re-read their posts before hitting the submit button - it's a bit different to when you're speaking with a person and the moment takes you.

And there are those who use it so often it's a habit and they can't structure a sentence without throwing in profanity - they're not trying to offend, they just do it automatically. It's not worth the arguments that can cause if someone sees it and goes off on one, thinking it was meant in a nasty way when it could just be their manner of speech.

I'm pretty sure I'll be turning completely degenerate meself (to use my own terms against me) when I hit the labour ward in a few weeks' time anyway ;)

Re: Language Filter

You have the general gist of it. I truly feel sorry for Steve as I'm going to be a class A bitch to him as soon as the pain kicks in. He's got the right idea by staying home while I go into hospital though - I don't think slamming his balls in the car door would be a nice thing to do. And he's bound to say something helpful like "pop a couple of aspirin and you'll be fine".

Plan is to get me into hospital before I can shout at him, I think...

Hmm, what? Oh nothing, just got lost in my thoughts there.

Cue the "Shoot her! Shoot her!"-scene from the first Jurassic Park movie.
