The main problem as I see it is that homosexual people have been effectively told to "Keep it in the closet" which creates an abnormal pressure when released is over the top and offensive to some.
Expressing ones sexuality is definitely a "right time and right place" sort of thing. That being said it is very much part of many people's identity so is inseparable from any expression of who they are which a HUGE part of participating in any community online or otherwise.
