Re: Soda or Pop...or Soda Pop?

Just wondering, what do the British call candy? I've heard them say "lollies" when it's not a lollipop, and it just confuses me.

Say, one of my British friends and I were at a minimart together, and I hear her say "that lolly looks delicious!" so I look around for a lollipop. To no avail, I say, "what lollipop?" She points to some gummy worms.

Re: Soda or Pop...or Soda Pop?

Much like the motherland, we also say lollies. "Candy" doesn't sound right without an American accent.

We don't say lorries, though. We just say trucks.

You know what I don't get though? Why do yanks say jelly? It don't make no snese.

Re: Soda or Pop...or Soda Pop?

The well, "candy" definitely doesn't work in an Australian accent. Except as a prostitute name.

Re: Soda or Pop...or Soda Pop?

Candy = Sweets.

Candy isn't said unless it's cotton candy or candy floss. (They're the same thing but I believe it's up to preference.)

Re: Soda or Pop...or Soda Pop?

i say soda and i say candy
if i want a specific one then i say i want a "sprite/snickers/zots"
if i say that i want a soda or candy, that usually means that i'm gonna be standing idle in front of the fridge or candy isle for about 10 minutes.

curse my indecisiveness.........

Also, I say Candy.

What?...instead of Jam?...

"Jelly is a clear, bright product. It is generally made by cooking fruit juice and sugar with pectin as a jelling agent and lemon juice as an acid to maintain a consistent texture. Jelly is firm and will hold its shape (it shakes). Generally, jelly contains no pieces of fruit, although specialty jellies, like pepper jelly, may include pieces of jalapeo or other pepper.

Jam is made from crushed or chopped fruit cooked with sugar, and often pectin and lemon juice. Jam can be a pure of fruit or have a soft pulp, but it does not contain chunks of fruit."

I love doing this trivial research...it's fun :D
Language is such a tricky thing it is

there's the whole list of what people call them (preserves/marmalade...etc.)

Must just be them because lollies are Lollipops or Ice Lollies being the ice cream etc variation of them too. Candy would be Sweets as Droded said. Gummy Worms are Gummy Worms.

Not true DD, over here we have "Gummy Snakes" and "Gummy Night Crawlers" on top of the normal worms.

we have all of those as well, but we see past their petty labels
any gummi that is long and thin, regardless of sour powder, is known as a gummi worm. gummi worm is what it has always been, and gummi worm it shall forever remain.
respect.

If thats the name of them then there would be no variation here. We wouldnt call a Gummy Snake/Frog or whatever other animal gummy a Gummy Worm as its not a worm. They would always be known by what they resemble so would be the same (would be like calling a door a shoe otherwise). Though the only thing i can think of that a Gummy Night Crawler could be is a Gummy version of the X-Men character.

Oh, you silly Brits and your funny lingo.

Well, they did come first. I heard a quote once...

"The English invented the language, the American's improved on it, but the Australians completely ruined it."

It's funny because it's true.

I'm afraid it must have been something along the lines of America making it worse, and then Australia wrecked it.
