Sony PS3 Red Light of Death

Working at Best Buy one of my jobs testing the equipment. That the customers bring in and say aren't working. On Saturday a customer brought in a PS3 that had a blinking Red light and wouldn't power on to a functional state.

Now in case you don't know the PS3 has a switch on the back that powers it on and off. The switch in the front toggles between stand by and active modes. Presumably this is so customers can play their Blu-Ray discs without the usual delay. Blu-Ray drives take a while to start up.

I turned on the power and the system and it started up in stand by mode. Next I pressed the "power button" that brings it into active mode. It went red then yellow then switched to a blinking Red light. I did this over and over and over again with the same results :( I powered it on and off again and still no Luck.

Now the only reason that I tried to get it to boot so many times is because the guy had a game in the drive and there is no way to release it the way you can a regular CD because it's a slot loading drive. I did about a ten minute search on the web and all I came up with were people saying how to disassemble the thing and I didn't want to mess with his warranty even though he had a service plan with Best Buy. If we destroyed it trying to get the disco out it would be more costly than just replacing the game which is what we did (not that any other Best Buy would do that.) I glad they did that for him though.

So I called Sony and waited on hold for around fifteen minutes. We weren't busy fortunately. I ask him if there was anything we could do to get the system running again and he gave me the standard power off in the back and restart it. Which I had already done. I then asked him how do get the disco out of the drive and they told me it can't be done unless you can get it to successfully to start. Fortunately with Sony's low failure rate there is little to worry about but If I get one of them I'm going to make sure I don't leave any discs in the drive.

Blinking Red Light Of Death... oh dear...

Re: Sony PS3 Red Light of Death

It'll be the Wii next to get the red ring of death. It's like a plague amongst the consoles, I tells ya! Hope it doesn't infect my Sega Mega Drive. :ninja:

Re: Sony PS3 Red Light of Death

It's definitely a Microsoft conspiracy:ninja:

Re: Sony PS3 Red Light of Death

the solution of the problem is very hard to find, the error is common with installing other OS, i have ran in to it several times, there are a few simple steps.

1st turn main power off at least 15 seconds
2nd press the start button, hold till it beeps twice
3rd it must beep twice

this will rest the system back to the default setting you will have to reload any themes but all other information will be there like saved games ect.

hope this help

Re: Sony PS3 Red Light of Death

My power switch is like a regular light switch, so no matter how long I hold it down, it doesn't beep. My red light is not flashing, it just stay's on. Is it ruined?

My game (COD-MW2) was stuck, and I figured out a way to get the game out easily. All you do is while the system is off, hold down the standbymode and the eject button at the same time for 10 seconds, while still holding the standby and eject buttons, reach back with the other hand and turn the power on and you should hear the fan kick on with a few seconds. Once the fan kicks off, it should eject the game. If it doesn't, then press the eject button.

Could be an issue with the drive, are you getting any errors or anything?

(aware this is old thread but saved a new one being made)

Silly goose, Wii's don't have rings. They have dots.

Think its one of the disadvantages of modern technology, more things that can go wrong. As out of all the consoles ive owned over the years from my Atari and Amiga to my 360 only my Playstation, PS2 and 360 have died on me.

Its like an old granite wheel in comparison to a high-tech Formula 1 racing tire. You try getting a flat tire with the granite wheel!

Re: Sony PS3 Red Light of Death

My PS3 got that about 7 months ago while I was waiting for my 360 to return from red ring refurbishing. The cheapest repair I found was about $70 USD while Sony charges in the $150 range last time I checked.

Re: Sony PS3 Red Light of Death

It's Video Game Aids, I tell ya. Wii's gonna be the last to get it, it's so innocent.

Re: Sony PS3 Red Light of Death

My 360 has died twice on me and I have an old Sega Megadrive that still works that I have had since
I was 4 years old. It's ridiculous !

Re: Sony PS3 Red Light of Death

Our sega broke :(. Twas a sad day

Re: Sony PS3 Red Light of Death

There was a Game shop that opened in our mall recently that sells all the old consoles just like most game stores did in the old days. When I noticed this, I went in and bought a SNES and Genesis for $50 (together), and about 10 games for $30. I was so ****ing HAPPY.

I prefer to use emulators. You get the exact same experience, but with 10x the convenience

Re: Sony PS3 Red Light of Death

Nothing beats the real thing.

Fact.

Well, I guess I'm just a tight arse then.
