Stem Cell Research

Re: Stem Cell Research

I personally think that science is more important than a few cells which could develop into a human. That being said, it still doesn't sit quite right with me.

We can, however, create embryonic stem cells without using an embryo. They've found a way to get the cells from adults, and change them into equally stemmable stem cells.

In the case of cloning, that's a tricky subject. Is it wrong if we go down the route of planet Krypton*? Probably.

When you think about it though, cloning in the same way actually happens naturally. Identical twins are fairly common, but if we augment the process, then that's wrong?

It's a very tricky minefield, but overall, I'm against human cloning.

* If you don't know, before they all went crazy and destroyed the planet, everyone had at least three clones of themselves kept in cryogenic stasis, so that they could harvest them for organs when needed.

Re: Stem Cell Research

there are stem cells in the umbilical cord witch they throw away any way so im all for it

the whole dead baby thing is fear mongering from religious ppl who think we where inbread children of adam and eve and have no idea what a human genome is or who Ardi is

Re: Stem Cell Research

I would say that although technically an embryo is 'alive', can it think or feel? Is it aware? If not, then what's the difference between using an embryo for research which could lead to scientists making all sorts of breakthroughs, and killing a plant?

Re: Stem Cell Research

I have no status on stem cell research, I am for cloning though, just for the fact of saving countless lives and also so big companies like Microsoft will have a million Jason Stathams running around kicking peoples butts.

Re: Stem Cell Research

I'd like to have a clone of myself actually. So I could perform deviant sexual acts upon myself.

Because a plant doesn't have the potential to think or feel. It's been fairly well known, for quite a while, that most embryos turn into adults eventually.

Whilst that would be cool, I feel the opposite. What if you were one of the clones? How would you feel about that? Clones are literally people too.

Or as a tee shirt I nearly got twice for Christmas (long and uninteresting story) once said, "Clones are people two."

Thats... umm... ok...

Re: Stem Cell Research

Wow, where might I get that shirt? Cause that is funny, I do agree they are people aswell, and that is what makes the debate almost as bad as the three other unmentionables.

Re: Stem Cell Research

As soon as they start aborting babies for the purpose of using their fetus' for stem cell research, that is where I draw the line. Otherwise, if there really isn't any other use for the fetus and it is just going to be disposed of, I don't see much of a problem with it.

Re: Stem Cell Research

I don't have a problem with abortion. I can see how it causes such uproar, and I can see how it can be classed as a form of 'murder'. I like to think of things like this: What if that baby's parents are abusive towards each other, alcoholic and are likely to bring the child up witnessing violence? Not every child who suffers manages to get help from social services or any other child safety service. Would it not be better for the woman to have an abortion and save the child from growing up to become a violent alcoholic too?

Re: Stem Cell Research

The medical possibilities for stem cells are amazing so I'm all for it. Obviously I don't like killing babies, but as its been stated there are other ways of getting stem cells.

The biggest problem I have with stem cell research is the people who are totally against them and yet don't know what the hell a stem cell even is. You know, the "their killing babies so they can clone Hitler!!!!! OMFG!!!!!" people.

what with overpopulation and such becoming a growing concern, i say let's sacrifice some cells to help the rest of us who are already here.

That is the most intelligent thing anyone has said so far on this topic.

Re: Stem Cell Research

Stick my oar in: You can get stem cells from adults, do it. Stem cell research is useful in studying cures for cancer DO IT YOU ****ING ****SUCKING TWATS, AND NOW.

Abortion: In general, I disapprove. I'm fine with contraceptives. Fine with the morning-after pill. Fine with very, very early abortions. Later... it gets iffy. You know that if you don't do anything to it, it will hopefully turn into a living human being.

My mom has, on occasion, said that it might be better to abort some babies who would be born with mental disabilities. This is because she is a special ed teacher, and she has seen how utterly ****ed over these kids can be when their parents are too inept to care for them.

I... am iffy. That smacks of eugenics. But... the kids have a **** quality of life. But... I don't think that anyone sane wants to die. If you do, that's a problem NOT best solved by dying.

"Let's abort babies to reduce our overpopulation problem!" Great plan. Rich industrialized people don't have much of an overpopulation probem. The places with overpopulation problems are typically poor, with ****ty health services. Great plan! Let's ship our doctors over to less-developed countries to abort their fetuses! It'll be a public-relations dream! Very much like a dream, in fact.'

Cloning? Body parts, yes. People? Why? What's the point?

Those kids have every right to be alive, abortion free...If not more so than you or me. I believe in killing babies regardless of race, gender, and mental capacity.

point being, the disabled already have the short end of the stick. They are all nicer than us "normal" people, more carefree and well-intentioned than us... if anything I'd say the world would be a better place if we aborted everyone who WASN'T disabled. but to not contradict my statement on discrimination-free baby killing I'm just going to leave it at legalize abortion everywhere, legalize stem-cell research, and legalize weed so i can be happy if the other two don't work out :D

A) You have an extremely idealized image of special ed kids and have clearly not spent much time around them.

B) I wasn's saying "legalize only then." I was repeating what my mom has said once or twice: some of these kids have parents who would be barely competent to raise normal kids, who are completely ****ing over the ones they have because they just can't handle it.

C) Abortion is controlled, but legal. Stem-cell research has, as far as I know, nothing banning it. Pot is illegal most places and circumstances.
