Virgin are pretty good - go on their website to check whether they cover your area and what speed you'll get. Sky are crap :)

tell me about it and i looked at virgn reviews well basicly every net out their reviews are scary and i want a fast 20mb unlitmed download and no screws ups can be hard to find with reviews:(

Re: what broadbrand should i sign up with?

yup, we're with Virgin. Aside from our builders destroying our internet cable, we've had no issues with Virgin as a company. I wouldn't bother with user reviews so much, if that's what you're meaning by reviews. People talk all kinds of crap on the internet and those who moan about a service provider tend to be those who cannot get them in their area.

Virgin offer a good unlimited deal, in my opinion, and we are on the internet almost 24 hours a day in our house so it gets a lot of usage with no slowing down whatsoever.

Re: what broadbrand should i sign up with?

I'm with Virgin and they've been really good so far. I think it's pretty hit and miss if you go with BT or Sky cos, depending on how far you are away from the datacenters or whatever, the more your connection speed degrades.

I was looking into swapping over to BT recently and I immediately dismissed the idea after using their 'broadband estimate tool' or whatever it's called. I's an official tool on the BT website which will measure your distance from their datacenter HW and give you an estimate as to how fast you can expect your broadband seed to be. With their 20MB package, if their tool is anything to go by, it was estimated that I would get an average speed of 6MB.

6MB? 6MB out of 20MB? I honestly thought that they must be havin' a laugh. I stuck with Virgin and I'm enjoying the 10MB that I'm paying for. I am considering going for that juicy 50MB package though...

Do let us know how you get on with Virgin!

Re: what broadbrand should i sign up with?

Also, when it says 20MB, it usually means MegaBITS. Not Megabytes. There are 7 megabits in 1 megabyte.

So if it says like, 5 mbps, that usually means 5/7 of a megabyte.

Well, it America, that's how it is. Dunno about where you live though.

i have the fastest dial up the world has ever known! :ninja:
no..actually, i have time warner road runner. road runner is the best i've had, and i <3 it very much.

are time warner and comcast not overseas? :wassat:

Re: what broadbrand should i sign up with?

It all depends on where you live, I'm afraid. If you're on one speed with one ISP, you'll probably be on that speed with another unless you move.

*Hiss*

Comcast bought out Time Warner in Texas. Road Runner is no more here.

****ers.

Re: what broadbrand should i sign up with?

I was with Virgin when i lived at my parents house (take that how you will) and never had a single issue with them for 2-3 years. I dont live there anymore and we have Sky in our rented place and never had a problem either but id go back with Virgin if given the choice (which we may in future).

Re: what broadbrand should i sign up with?

Quick question Andy - what makes you consider going back to Virgin again? Would you say their service is noticeably better? Matt uses Sky and he swears by 'em but I was just wondering which one you preferred and why.

I cant really complain about much but i think my download speeds might have been fractionally faster on Virgin but im using wireless here instead of a wired connection so would be hard to compare and also unfair. Guess its because they kept upping my speeds for free and whole Virgin Package works out cheaper than Sky (from what i know). No complaints of either though to be honest as ive had no issues (with the Net anyway) Sky for TV are a pain in the ass but that wouldnt apply to you anyway.
