Documentation obtained by Joystiq – and subsequently confirmed with two separate sources – reveals that "USB Mass Storage Device Support on Xbox 360" will soon be a reality. The document, authored by a senior software development engineer at Microsoft, states that due to "increased market penetration of high-capacity, high throughput USB mass storage devices, a 2010 Xbox 360 system update" will allow consumers to save and load game data from USB devices. The update is purportedly coming in Spring 2010.

Once the update occurs, Xbox 360 owners will be able to download Xbox Live Arcade games, Xbox Live Indie games, Games on Demand, DLC and Title Updates to the storage device. "USB storage devices may, however, have far greater memory capacity than MUs (at the date of writing, the largest MU is 512 MB), and may therefore support previously infeasible operations-such as installation of a full disc-based title." That's right, you can also store disc-based games to the USB device; however, it will require the disc to be in the tray for authentication, identical to the current functionality.

Re: Xbox 360 recieving USB Storage Support in Next Update

great, now we'll be able to bring DLCs to other Xboxs :)

Re: Xbox 360 recieving USB Storage Support in Next Update

Ah, forgot to mention. There's a storage cap on the USBs, 16GB is the highest that will be compatible. You can click the Joystiq logo for the rest of the article as there is more information.

Got that right, it read music off USB devices and could copy stuff off them to the 360 hard drive so why not the other way around?

Why would you need that sort of space? Ive got a 20Gb standard 360 one and still got 12Gb free and ive had this since launch. I have about 7 USB memory sticks lying around that amounts to about 50Gb and that would be more than enough.

i would install all the games i play regularly (cept for halo) on the hdd. That would probably be 60gb+

Re: Xbox 360 recieving USB Storage Support in Next Update

Sweet! I wonder if you can use an mp3 player to store stuff too?

As far as im aware the game only loads from the hard drive when you install them. I dont think they would allow you to install them to anything other than the official hard drive to save piracy. So regardless of the size of USB memory unit they allow this wouldnt have any effect on installing games.

Only way it would help is if you had a 120Gb Elite hard drive and were running out of space and moved saves and DLC to a USB storage device to free some space to install games onto the HD.

With what sort of content? Lots of DLC? Or installed games? I tend to remove mine once im finished with a game, im quite the 'tidy freak' when it comes to PC's and computer things in general.

Actually, you'll be able to install your games onto the USBs (was also in the article :P) and the 360 will read it from there, but it will still require you to have the game disc for authentication. Yep, if it wasn't for needing that game disc, Gamefly would get a crazy influx of rentals.

Re: Xbox 360 recieving USB Storage Support in Next Update

i hope they make it more then 16 gb, then i'd but a 1Tb extended drive lol

you can install games on the externall hdd. but to play them you will still need the disk in the tray
