What is proper repping practice?

I've seen a "everyone gets repped" thread get closed, thank gawd.
But everywhere else, I could probably type up a death to Peter thread and someone will go "+rep". I don't understand.

Is it for when you agree with someone?
Is it for when you appreciate what someone said or did?
Is it for when you feel like being a postwhore, you can have another post saying "+rep".

Is there an instruction booklet or a man page for the reputation points?

It is because of the gross overuse of the "+rep" post that I would find the smiley for it very unpleasant. Imagine strolling down a thread, and every three posts you see that face waving that sign, that would be annoying, no? At least text is easier to ignore.

That is a good question. When I first started posting here, I thought of it much like the fable game, you did something to earn you renown, you got +rep. Now I don't really know. I guess it's interpretive since I have seen no set guide line for it, nor any actual rules stated.

The +rep post was a bit much. Yet entertaining in it's own right. I don't think it should be used that way though.

I think if if we get the +rep smiley you are going to see it being overly used for a couple days because everyone, excuse me, most people, want it and are going to be enjoying it.

I think it will balance out and things will return to normal. I don't always post that I gave someone plus rep, I guess it depends on the situation.

But when you are the only one who is annoyed by this, it makes it hard to agree with one person over many. And yes, repping people is overused, but usually one man armies don't really work too well. So, unless Steve finds this unnecessary, it is looking like it is going to happen.

I'm not a fan of the Smiley personally, and I agree with JohnDoe in that it would be horribly annoying having to look at that every time I come on the forums.

I used to find it neat, because Todd made it himself and it was 'new' back then, but now when used like this it becomes annoying.

I reckon they should maybe have a +Rep smiley, just one that isn't so cheery and different from the other smileys, making it easier to ignore.

Yes, that's a very nice suggestion. Skorm & Avo ftw. But I don't think it would be easy, as there aren't any official pics of Skorm & Avo - their looks, that is.
