So, I hit "Norfolk" on Wikipedia when I was looking for info on Norfolk, Virginia, AKA one of the biggest ports on the East Coast and a HUGE military center and naval shipyard.

And the UK Norfolk came up. And I went, what the ****? What does the UK Norfolk have going for it? I don't know a damn thing about it, or anything important that it does. I read its page and, yeah, it didn't do much for it. So I have no idea why "Norfolk" redirects to the UK one.

So that's my question. Which one do you think of? And where are you from? I made a poll, but you should probably post it in your post, too.

Obsiously, I'm a Marylander and I think of Norfolk, VA. Maryland is due north of Virginia, and I am interested in shipbuilding and the Navy. So that might have something to do with it.

The reason it redirects to the UK Norfolk, is because we named it that first (the Norfolk you speak of was named after the county by the settlers/invasion force)

Anyway, to answer your question - not good things, mostly jokes that culminate in webbed feet.

I think Vikings?

Nor(th) Folk....

Me too, actually. But whenever I read it, suddenly also the thought ''Narwhal'' comes in, for some reason. Now I never thought thatg was it, but the names looked like each other just enough to make me think about it. =|

I hesitate to point out that that's a really dumb reason. Wikipedia-formatting-wise. People are far more likely to be looking for Norfolk-the-major-US-port-city-military center than Norfolk-the-UK-version-of-West-Virginia.

This is like saying, what do you think of when you hear 'Denmark'? The country, or the small town in Maine.

I'm betting the answers you get here will be entirely geographically-based. You and I and other Yanks will think of VA, while dem Brits and such will think of the UK. We don't know of their town, they don't know of ours. Typically.

Inbreeding, cause it reminds me of Norwich.

Norwich reminds me of inbreeding cause it's the first thing I ever heard about the place and have constantly heard about it from comedians.

Entertaining fact: Norfolk is smaller, and has a smaller population than Norfolk. But if you include all of Hampton Roads (Norfolk, Newport News, Chesapeake, etc,) it's still smaller, but the total population exceeds that of Norfolk. (Note: Yes, that was deliberately supposed to be confusing.)

But yeah... MAYBE making it automatically go to the oldest example of the name makes sense, since "which is more important" can be subjective, but wouldn't it make more sense if it went to the disambiguation page? (Note: Yes, I am arguing about the way Wikipedia does things for no apparent reason. I'm BOOORED!

No, that's like saying "which do you think of first when you hear 'Birmingham,' the US city or the UK city?" Only the Norfolk in the US is way more important than the one in the UK, and the Birminghams are roughly equivalent.

That's why I asked where everyone was from. Also, Norfolk in the UK is a county, and Norfolk in the US is a city... which is equivalent to a county in Virginia's weird-ass political breakdown, but whatever*.

Norfolk Island.

Wheresat?

Norfolk, the county. But surely everyone will of heard of that first...

Why? I might have been vaguely aware that it existed, but (no offense to Brits everywhere) Norfolk, UK is monumentally unimportant.

I think of NCIS, but that's just me.

You know what's funny about that? From NCIS headquarters at the Washington Navy Yard to Norfolk is a fairly obscene drive. More than three hours. And yet they make it on a pretty regular basis on that show.

I think of Norfolk Shipyard from Freelancer. Props to anybody who knows what I'm talking about.

Of course I know what you're talking about. I was just talking about Norfolk shipyard. It is a real place, after all.

*No one cares, but Virginia has 90+ counties and independent cities. Most of them are very small. So technically, Norfolk and Norfolk are both counties.

Also, to focus on my usual obsession, Maryland is smaller than VA, and we have 23 counties and an independent city, Baltimore. But all of our counties are bigger than Virginia's, by a good deal. It's kinda entertaining. And our counties are still smaller than the UK's. Or at least my home county is smaller than Norfolk.
