Star Marine Update coming to Star Citizen soon

starfps.jpg

The highly anticipated first/third person combat portion of the record breaking kickstarter funded Star Citizen is coming and its soon (after a couple of delays & no word on it). According to Cloud Imperium Games in a new update it should be released on August 10th.

Press Release

It has been another big week for the Star Marine team! We’ve continued our focus on animation-related issues, as we see getting the unified first/third-person animation as our biggest goal. That’s one of the most important things that will carry over into the rest of Star Citizen, in Arena Commander, the Social Module, Squadron 42 and beyond. Other team members are using this time to continue perfecting other systems, including weapons and the general design of the Gold Horizon level. You can find details on our progress and ongoing blockers below. We’ve also included an updated video showing the recent lighting changes to the Gold Horizon level; it should show off the changes a little better than last week. Enjoy!

Please note that next week’s Star Marine update may come the following Monday (August 10 rather than August 7.) We expect it will be all-hands-on-deck to support the Gamescom presentation on Friday!

The cast of Star Citizen's single-player component Squadron 42 stars actors Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson and more, Cloud Imperium announced during CitizenCon 2015 this weekend.

The space simulation’s crowdfunding total currently sits at US$92 million and remains the most backed crowdfunding project ever. Cloud Imperium Games expects the total to reach US$100 million by the end of the 2015.

There's something about that last frontier that has people very excited these days. I don't know who is going to have the magic formula that everyone likes the most, but I wonder if it will also appeal to me the most. I have weird tastes, it'd be great if the game I like and the game other people like is the same, then we could talk about it like normal people. I think that's what happens, right?

Right. Super enthusiastic.

Maybe it's just me... but Gary Oldman kinda looks like a hairy thumb in that picture.

But this game looks flippin' awesome. This one seems a lot more up my alley than Elite and NMS right now so I'm definitely going to keep tabs on this game. And that's alpha footage you say? Muy bueno.

Yeah it's VERY early alpha footage as unlike Elite Dangerous this isn't already available in alpha on Steam (and now XB1 too). Apparently it's still years away from being properly released so unsure when it will enter playable alpha.

Grabbed my attention as it seems to have the best of some of the other space titles in one package. Space Travel, Space Combat/Dog Fighting, Planet Landings plus on foot 1st person combat.

Is it weird that that's what I'm wanting from a space game? Sure, I want to do the asteroid thing, mine and collect resources, buy/sell/trade, get upgrades for my ship(s), but I also really, really want to have a really big rad gun and I want to shoot it at stuff. And I want to do that in space, on the ground, maybe both. Kick open the hatch, jump out of the pod and just start shooting people. I think that'd make a great game. But not everyone has the same tastes that I do, dunno, maybe having awesome stuff in your game is a weird thing.

I agree to be honest, I mean I like the idea of Star Wars style space dogfights but space is pretty dull. Dogfights on a black backdrop can be great but not very visually stimulating from a detailed world perspective. I want to be able to go from planet surface to space to another planet surface and get out of my ship and explore interiors on the planets (abandoned bases/caves/caverns and such). Having nothing but an empty planet to fly around and look at the same terrain over and over will only entertain you for so long. I want to be able to have combat on foot, inside the ships in space, ship to ship combat and also maybe man guns on bases to have ground to air attacks too.

I want the ships to actually feel like vehicles and to not have the ship feel like it's my character. I want you to know there are individuals in those ships and in the big battle cruiser style ones there can be hundreds of them inside. When things go bad you will know there are players running around inside trying to salvage things and save their lives and abandoning the ship in smaller ships. They should almost feel like "levels" of a normal game themselves inside.

My god man take it easy, my penis can only get so erect.

What you described would be the absolute most perfect space game for me, ever. Spend like 10hrs obsessing over my character's appearance and stats, recruit and get to know my crew, build and maintain my ship, etc. The idea of being in an epic battle and the crew living quarters takes a direct hit and everyone in there is in a real-time panic, fires being fought, loved ones wounded and dying... that attention to detail would fill me with an immeasurable level of hype.

I would also personally love the ability of scavenge runs, so say you come across a derelict ship, no crew on board (or is there?) but there's useful resources to be had. You can either go it alone or take a couple mates, now give me some 1st-person on foot gameplay Alien: Isolation style that gets the adrenaline pumping and that's it... social life dead. Great, now look what you made me do, got myself even more percolated.

Had the same reaction. My draft of my reply still here, in case I can ever read that and not have a dangerously male-enhancing effect.

It's like if the beginning of Mass Effect 2 was a thing that could happen regularly.

But you said that magic word, hype. I don't want to convince myself of the idea that my ideal super fantastic space game that I'll be playing for the next 50 years is going to be one of these, but maybe one comes sorta close. All about realistic expectations.

I was thinking of some taglines I'd say while doing this exact activity. I had a bunch of good ones but all I can remember now is "In space, no one can hear you cry." Crap, I'm going to be thinking about that all day now.

But certainly, the opportunity to drive people nuts with movie and game references would be limitless.

As more games are using permadeath as a viable option and losing what you have discovered and built I think we may get closer to that feeling with more games in future once the balance of risk/reward has been sorted. I want to be able to explore planets and parts of space and not have all 'life' be friendly and have certain parts of space be out of bounds etc if you have dealt with a particular faction or allied with any that are enemies of another. But give you a reward for venturing into this dangerous territory and risking your life. I think lots of developers will be looking at No Mans Sky/Elite Dangerous and this as the start of something exciting in the space genre and where it goes from here could be very exciting. As far as im aware a lot of this is already planned for Star Citizen but I dont know what sort of detail they are looking at going into currently.

Imagine having the feeling of Alien Isolation but with multiple AI's or player controlled enemies boarding a ship full of other characters controlled by players. Im thinking of something along the lines of when the Covenant first start boarding the ship in Halo, cutting the doors while all the marines sit waiting for them to break through and actually having to fight for your characters life but the ship isnt a level its merely transport you can escape from and have enemies pursue you.

Yeah I don't want to get my hopes up for something like that either, but with games starting to seemingly inject steroids into their freedom veins like Fallout 4 it's giving me a glimmer of hope. Like... just take Fallout 4, and then throw the whole damn thing in space. Give me a game where I can do anything I want, whenever I want, and however I want, and let there be dynamic real-time consequences where anything can and will happen. Regardless of my character's existence. But do it in space.

If I can't have a game like that in the next 10 years, then fine, but within the next 50-60 years before I die? Then I'll be very disappointed in this industry.

If permadeath was in it would definitely allow me to make more desperate decisions for my character... just how selfish is one person willing to go? Try to save as many of the crew as you can and risk your life, or say sayonara to 'em all and flee the ship. I would love to see those consequences.

"You stepped into the wrong neighborhood kid, nobody's gonna you hear you scream now." I would love for there to be places in space that you never wanna go to (but can) and always hear tales of such places, like the internet. Ran by other dangerous users, maybe you can join them or try to put a stop to them with your own scrappy fleet or from the inside. The possibilities and rewards of such would be endless.

Oh that would be amazing, other people boarding a ship vying for its resources... winner takes all. Maybe have your partners backstab you once they realize they're on the losing team (permadeath encouragement). Or, everyone can get along and negotiate a deal of fair trade of the ship. Divide the goods in a civil manner and nobody has to die that day.

-_- aw man, somebody make this goddamn game already.

Its more server and technological limitations of particular studios that hold some games back, the studios have amazing ideas but not the financial or technological means to pull off those ideas so they remain just dreams. Problem today is that gamers are impatient, if a studio releases a trailer or concept idea too early then gamers are start crying foul a short way down the line that not enough progress is being made and studios arent working fast enough. So many games currently in early alpha that have been slated by gamers for simply not impressing them with their release timeline, despite the fact the game has only been in development for less than a year to 18 months and some games needing 5 years of development time. We are in a unique situation at moment by being able to play games in such an early state that I think some people have forgotten that games havent been openly playable pre-alpha before and its not a state we are used to seeing unless we have worked on development ourselves.

More games are toying with the idea of persistence on servers and players actions/events changing the level/world and players arriving after the event has happened finding what remains of those events. Base building, items, corpses etc are all already being used on persistent servers on some gamers and time limits on when items 'clean up' so there is a history behind some things people find. Hopefully as the years go on and servers get better as well as having better security we might see these ideas expanded upon.

I have found that games with permadeath make players have to adapt to different situations and find themselves doing things they wouldnt usually do. Sacrificing characters & friends to save their favourite characters life (State of Decay and DayZ for example). When dying means something you have less people running around with no care if they die or not and less games that are utter chaos of gunfire like CoD as people play more tactically and tread more carefully.

Having a character wounded and players having to frantically search for bandages, morphine, crafting splints for broken limbs etc is fascinating as you are seeing someone struggle to stay alive and the lengths they would go to merely keep the stuff they have found. I think these ideas expanded outside a regular level and into space would be amazing as you know there are thousands of events going on around the world and the planet you are on is just a small part of that persistent game world. Knowing things you do can be found by other players and you coming across other huge events that have happened elsewhere to tie whole game world together is every MMO players dream.

Could have real factions like the ones hinted at in many games and bonuses given to you by one but the more cash you make them and more missions you complete for them the more other factions notice you. Some may want you dead and offer bounties and some may want to make you a better offer to work for them as you are great at making salvage runs and theft. I want players to be rewarded for working together so that games dont just become shoot on sight titles and nothing more than giant death matches.

Well to be fair that's the developers own silly fault for revealing their games too early (I really hate this new trend), case in point Tom Clancy's: The Division. I was so impressed and pumped by that game when it was first unveiled, absolutely blew my mind... 3 years later now is it? Couldn't care less for it anymore, they took too long to release it and the visual buzz is gone, there are now better looking games and with Rainbow Six Siege looming over, my interest has shifted elsewhere. If Fallout 4 had been revealed 3 years ago and was releasing like it is now, it would have lost so much momentum and interest over time despite what it freakin' is of course. Devs have got to stop showing their games so darn early. Go back to the old days and unveil a game a year before release at the longest, no more.

That would be lovely, as long as they remember to keep regular backups of their server data. Nothing more sad in the realm of video games than to lose an epic amount of progress due to technical difficulties. Something that's completely out of your control.

Amen to that, gets boring playing other multiplayer games that simply boil down to: Run, Shoot, Kill, Die, Respawn, rinse & repeat. COD indeed, pushing the industry forward.

I also like the idea that seeing someone else struggling could give you the opportunity to possibly aid them and form a new alliance together, on the other hand they may not trust you (thanks to permadeath) and just straight up attack you out of paranoia. Me and Kath experienced a bit of that when we were playing Fallen Earth (basically MMO Fallout, but not as deep) and it was a pretty impressive feeling.

To add onto that, I would also love it if the act of mundane grinding could be done away with or at the least be made less tedious and more enjoyable. Give more things to do in the world that can grant experience or levels so that your only source isn't just endless fetch quests & killing.

Its shareholders and the 'suits' that force games to be revealed so early so they can generate that buzz to increase their stocks worldwide. The developers are just puppets in the corporate game usually and have no real say as to really early reveals that only unveil a game name or concept trailer with no gameplay.

As games are pushing towards more seamless single player/online experiences, servers will be involved more and more and with stupid groups like Lizard Squad aiming to ruin these online services and take them down at will its going to happen more and more before it gets better. Luckily most online only/server reliant games are now incorporating DDOS protection systems and increased hacking counter measures.

I think thats one of the most appealing things, the whole risk reward thing and death really meaning something. It totally changes how you play a game when you cant simply run in spraying bullets, die and then respawn and do same thing again until you kill them. When you risk losing the items you have found you are far more tactical and if by saving someone else you have a better chance of survival you are more likely to do it.

Games just need to vary their quests a little more and give XP for more things. Much like FPS's started to reward teamwork by giving XP for assist kills/healing members and suppressing fire etc more needs to be done in RPG's to reward you for doing certain actions and encourage different styles of play.

Well they need to stop because it's often doing the opposite. Having some restraint can go a long way, blow your load too soon and people will lose interest later and move onto something else. It's like the act of a street salesman touting all these amazing things for you, things that are so attention grabbing and it gets you pumped beyond measure... problem is, it's over 3 years away. That's not very clever.

They're just a bunch of script kiddies that do it for the lulz. Some of the members have already been arrested and getting arrested for doing ****s & giggles will only be appealing for so long (especially with increasing consequences). That's the difference between Lizard Squad and an actual group of protesting hackers, they'll get bored eventually.

I agree, but at the same time it just gave me flashbacks as a kid of how infuriating it can be once in awhile. Those old 8-bit/16-bit games that don't allow you to save, and you've made so much progress.... BOOM, cheap death and now you have to start all over. I would be so mad to have done so much, gained so much, and then some dirty bugger snipes me in the back from 200 yards away.

That'd be nice, add in XP gains from crafting parts, ships, successful negotiations, or recruiting members for your crew, etc. Plus it gives me something else to do in the game to get away from the daily grind.

They do this to generate a buzz to 'predict' interest and future sales, its all political and to raise their stocks for investors. They dont really care about the games they are promoting, just about how much money they can make off that title and studio as soon as possible.

Agreed but the more media attention they get calling them 'hackers' (which they are not) and the more their name gets out there the more they are encouraged to do it. They believe they are the law in the digital world and everyone must obey them or face the consequences and try to hold companies and gamers to ransom.

At that point you had lost all your progress and was gone forever, in these cases you could always track the person down again and retrieve your gear so there is that chance to get it back.

It worked for FPS titles like Battlefield and encouraged teamwork, people were no longer trying to steal team mates kills and killing team mates when they were about to complete and objective to steal the XP for themselves. If you were good at reviving team mates/providing covering fire and suppressing enemies for example you could quickly get even more XP and a higher score than someone at the top of the kills leader board even if you had 0 actual kills yourself. Was possible to top the leaderboard with highest score merely from points you had gained from completing objectives and team work. If more games rewarded you for more things outside kills etc then more players would vary their characters and play styles.[/quote]

Sigh. And that's why I hate the suits. Leave it to guys like Bobby Kotick with zero game development experience and ideas to help hold an industry back. I mean hey why bother trying to innovate when you can simply merge your entire resources into a single series. It's why Activision hasn't had a press conference in almost 10 years because they only have 3 games (a massive increase from 1).

True. Pay them no attention and get on with it, and they'll eventually give up when they see that nobody cares anymore. It's amazing how many things in this world can be destroyed and cease to exist when people simply stop caring.

Oh snap, I hadn't thought of that. Well in that case that makes it a-okay then and half the fun would be tracking the bastards down that did it.

Exactly. Developers need to start thinking outside the tiny box more, not every single stray from the core gameplay is some dangerous risk. I mean.. COD makes enough money to bring an entire country out of poverty, it can afford to take a few risks.

Thats why the indie developer rise happened I believe, as more and more gamers became concerned by these developers owned/ran by huge publishers who only cared about profits and financial year numbers. Bungie have done huge damage to their reputation when they aligned with Activision for Destiny and that 10 year deal is starting to look like a deal with the devil at this point in time. Filling the game with microtranactions for emotes and DLC as well as aligning themselves with Sony in big money deal done by Activision, it is hurting their rep and alienating their old fanbase.

They see themselves as celebrities and love the media attention these things get, only yesterday I was reading about 4 PC parts companies having their websites taken down due to DDOS attacks as well as a mobile phone brand website and services too. It is becoming a huge issue and they have even started to target game streamers by DDOSing their servers and Twitch services etc too.

Also would help if you had a friend to help and cover you, they could track them and get it back for you.

CoD has some nice ideas for the new game this being one of them I read about yesterday but yet again they never really stray too far from the tried and tested formula. Yeah they change the locations and time frame of the games which changes how they look and to an extent how you play them (double jumps and wall running etc) but they all boil down to the same old same old every single game these days. Dated & recycled animations and engine being the most glaring issues with the CoD series, tech wise it hasnt advanced as much as its storylines regarding tech have.
