I've always been fascinated by advertisements.

They do anything in their power to stand out from other advertisements, and no matter how much you try to shut them out, statistics say they are wildly effective and so they keep being made.

In one of my fall 2010 classes, we pulled out a magazine and the first 10-15 pages were all ads. The fact that they are effective even if you only glimpse them for a second blows my mind.

How affected by advertisements do you think you are in your daily life?

How affected am I by them... I'm not sure. They probably unconsiously removed the ability to analyze that, so that we won't find out how f**ked up we are, because of them. But wait, I did just analyze that, so I do have that ability. Or... Did they plant that notion of the ability still being there into my head? OR DID THEY CONTROL EVERYTHING I SAY IN THIS MESSAGE TO BEGIN WITH? AGH!

Seriously though, in Soviet Russia, you influence advertisement.

Probably the best advertisement banner I have ever seen.

I love how you can't see his other hand in the pic...

I don't think I have ever bought something purely based on the advertisement for it, but who knows.

I listened to a Gunsmoke collection on CD that included some vintage commercials. Ever since I'm had a 50's or 60's cigarette jingle stuck in my head.

****ing L&M filters. NO THIS IS NOT IT WILL YOU PLEASE STOP SINGING.

^Those old cig ads were cool! Yknow in the bad way.

I saw a 70's one for KOOL cigerettes were there's these two young kids and one is smoking and he gives it to the other for a puff and the kid goes "MMmm smooth, what is it?" And then it goes to when that kid is an adult dressed all 70's disco cool and it says 'Remember when you were..KOOL?'

But yeah the only place youre not going to see an advertisement is when you close your eyes these days. I dont know how much they affect me I guess they are really doing the job then.

I wont go scientific about it but once you study Tv and adverts it gets pretty Sci Fi how that crap can influence you.

The voices... in my h-head! They won't shut up! They're t-telling me things. Unspeakable t-hings!

This cosmic dance of bursting decadence and withheld permissions twists all our arms collectively, but if sweetness can win, and it can, then I'll still be here tomorrow to high-five you yesterday, my friend. Peace.

Get out!Shutupshutpshutpshutup!!!!!

Anyway, as I was saying, the real potent advertising won't make you go "Awww damn, I gotta git me some o' dat!" right away. It will get you when you're looking at the gum at the store. Which one will you pick? That brand you of that ad you spotted for a split second when looking through your magazine that's the one!

It is also why McDonalds have these playpens in their restaurants. When you're older and deciding where to get some fastfood, subconsciously you'll think of the fun you had at McDonalds. Not so much the food, but that playpen. As mentioned, the potent advertising doesn't make you want to go there right away, but you'll think of it later on. They're programming your mind!

i buy things on whim so adds dont effect me, again cus at work im surrounded buy them every where ive learnt to block them out. I rarely watch TV so i dont see a lot of commercials. If i need some thing like Shampoo or pants, ill just get the cheapest ones i can find. i often buy my clothes at the same place i buy my food i dont go to the gap or w/e

To be honest adverts never really affect me. Not once have I ever thought "I need to buy that", I've only ever thought "How long till the show starts again?" especially since even the most witty ads start to get dull after 3 or 4 times seeing them.

They are such apart of normal life I dont think they really affect anyone everyone is just accustomed to seeing them.

Commercial break on TV? Skip to something else.
Ads on websites? Never pay attention.
Ads in magazines? Skip right over it.

But still... I've seen them. Apparently that counts. But really, I just buy what I like. I evaluate what I'm going to get long before I do so. There is not a moment I think about what I'm going to get, which is then influenced by advertisments, because I already know what I'm getting. Most of what I see is of no relevance to me, and the things that are within my interests still don't get any attention, since I hesitate to spend my money. I only buy things I really want.

But then again, I haven't seen the researches about advertisements, so I don't really know how they would affect me, so maybe I am? But in the meantime, I really don't give a s**t about them. Actually, they annoy me.
