Ask The Staff 'Anything'

Re: Ask The Staff 'Anything'

Right now you can have him for keeps - all he does is scream if he's not asleep because he's not very well. And he needs changing A LOT - I mean, serious amounts of crap come out of that boy and I have no idea where it's all from coz it's not like he eats much... :sick:

Honestly? No idea. Don't suppose you can tell me why Americans seem to drop the 'H' in certain words like herb? Never understood that. Also why is it you pronounce 'buoy' as 'boo-ee' and we say 'boy'?

Not a clue. I hadn't even realized that we HAD those differences. I think that buoy might vary a fair deal, though, even in the US. I want to say that I heard them called "boys" when we went on vacation up to Massachusetts, but I could be making that up.

And how I'm trying to figure out how, exactly, that "h" would sound pronounced.

Re: Ask The Staff 'Anything'

Kind of like an exhalation - breathe out and add 'erb' to the sound. Then you get 'herb' the way we say it.

Poor explanation, I know, but it's the best I can think of...

I only realised the difference with the word 'buoy' when I watched my Blue Planet DVD and there were a bunch of marine biologists from California saying 'boo-ee' which confused me for ages until I realised what they were on about.

Yeah, it's definitely boo-ee to me, though other parts of Maryland might disagree (not sure). I think. And yeah, I kinda see what you mean about herb.

And yeah, I had the same problem with "khaki" that you did with "buoy," only for me it was from an Aussie audiobook. I don't know if it was really a different pronunciation or that they were calling a CAR khaki-- here, it refers just about exclusively to clothes. It took me a full minute to realize what they meant.

@Angel What is the meaning of life?

@Drakan I burnt your toast and put cheese on it to cover the evidence.

@Projectego Why?

@Angel What is your favorite vegetable?

@Drakan What is your favorite type of alchoholic drink?

@Projectego Why?

Attn Angel and ProjectEgo: May I cuddle your baby? I'll take off the spikes beforehand, promise!
Lol. Sure, go nuts. Warning in advance: My son pukes and craps like a trooper. We're almost certain he saves all that vomit up for when people hold him. He's gotten me twice this week. He managed to pee on my arm as well. BEWARE.

Sounds good to me Cheese on Toast is awesome.

Depends on my mood and the weather. On a normal day id drink beer but in summer i tend to drink various ciders and more 'Hot Weather' drinks with ice.

PSSST! Hey, Angel-- go with Hades. Lord of the Underworld, god of wealth, what more could you want?

Well, if you're Zeus you get to rape, seduce, and generally **** everything that moves; and if you're Poseidon you get to cause earthquakes and, I don't know, get all the fish you wish, but still, god of wealth, definitely.

As the good man Walker said, Hades it is. I reckon he's got more of a sense of humour than the other two...
