I'm not staff, but I AM an English major. At higher levels (college, in other words) English courses are sometimes film-related. F'rinstance, UMD currently has ENGL245, 379L, and 479M. From the sound of them, two are probably combined with another department, since one is about music and film and the other about fiction and film. The first is entirely about film, and so is probably English alone, which makes so much sense, doesn't it?

English and film studies have a kinky, sordid relationship whereby they will pass students and classes back and forth like especially popular swinging partners. Film is not always counted as the same thing as literature, and is in fact very different, but academia doesn't always care. And if there is no film studies degree, English will get lots of the relevant classes.

Nah, I'm British. We don't need to learn another country's language, no matter how widely spoken it may be. All we need to do is speak slowly, very loudly and wave our arms around in a variety of ridiculous gestures not dissimilar from a drunken game of charades.

That's how it's always been and that's how it always will be.
