Electron Boy saves the day!

The Make-A-Wish foundation is funded by donations - people who donate to this cause want the money spent to turn a kid into a superhero for a day.

It is putting on a friggin' show! It is "rich white man"-styled charity. It makes me sick to my stomach. Not to go all stereotypical and all, but it is so damnable American, too boot.

American black children > African black children.

How is making a terminally ill kid's dream come true hypocritical?

As I said, the money/effort could be placed in a lot of better places. Imagine a whole community like that raising funds for... anything but this... It is just as much as showing people that they "got their money's worth" as it is as helping children. After all, you don't get that "feel good!"-feeling from giving ten Africa children vaccine as you do from this... spectacle.

Self-righteous fool. It's not like charities for African black children don't exist, in which case I'd agree - but there's boatloads of those charities. How many charities dedicated to the same cause as Make A Wish? A few, maybe.

African black children aren't forgotten about, and the fact they decided to make one kid happy and unite a whole city whilst doing so doesn't get in the way of that.

So hush. No one cares about your self-righteous bullsh*t.

Re: Electron Boy saves the day!

You call me self-righteous?

That's a laugh.

At least I'm not nearly as selfish as these Make-a-wish people. So you'll excuse me if I'd rather save 10 or 100 children by donating to a charity that buys them food/medicine than making a single kid happy for a day - a kid who's still going to die. Perhaps because people prioritized a charity where they got to see their money in action instead of one that works in silence to develop a cure for cancer. But for all means, keep giving your money to these people, so that they can make a spectacle out of more children and feel good about themselves.

Yeah, how dare I disagree with one charity that makes people happy and makes dreams come true because they don't directly support a cause that a boatload of other charities do anyway. I thought I was the cynical twat, but you take the cake.

Re: Electron Boy saves the day!

Ease up on the insults will you? Not to flex my muscles and all, but I'm still a mod here and we're still bound by the forum rules. I've not been disrespectful towards you, neither.

Once again: What does making their dream come to matter in the long run, when the disease is still gonna kill them? If we didn't have foundations like this one, perhaps we could've been rid of cancer by now thus saving their life instead.

But you know what is even more bullcrap?

That they are foundations to begin with. Why the heck aint the government pouring enough money into various cancer research branches that they wouldn't have to ask for donations? But nah, bail out those banks instead....

What kind of logic is that?! That logic would only make sense if humanity was immortal.

"You should achieve your dreams!!"
"why, something is going to kill me anyway"

Seriously, what?

It is perfectly logical. I'm not talking about it as a general philosophy, it only applies to this case. Screw "feel good"-foundations like this one and pour all efforts into the cure of cancer and kids won't have to die. I bet that kid would care less about playing Electron Boy for a day if he didn't have to die.

Wouldn't you?

Re: Electron Boy saves the day!

Oh forget it. If you're really going to make a big deal out of ONE charity doing something outside of your liking, there's absolutely no point. The few thousand dollars this cost (Probably less since everyone helped voluntarily and didn't ask for a penny, probably including the people who owned the stadium) probably wouldn't have found the cure for cancer. And if it did, you could probably just wait a day for the exact same amount of funding that was lost by this event would come in by other people donating - so we may have had to wait another day or so to find the cure for cancer. Probably even less than that.

Re: Electron Boy saves the day!

I like what Make a Wish does, they truly do give those kids get the wish they want, like tickets to Sea World or Disney World or Disney Land or whatever they want, meet a player of a famous baseball team, coach a team for a day, stuff like that it's nice and it gives those kids hope and at least a day of relaxation. But a whole city stops for a day just so one child can run around the streets in a cape and light saber? I'm going to have to go with Tsuyu on this one, big waste of money. The money they used and time they spent on this one kid, could have gone to help the millions dying of AIDS and starvation in Africa.

Re: Electron Boy saves the day!

Calm down guys the little boy deserves it as does his family. He didnt choose to be ill and everyone involved will have done so voluntarily. It's a heart warming story and shows the good work that the Make a wish foundation do. The boy got to live his dream just for a day =) Anyway if you want to see money go to those in Africa then give it yourself any donation will help it doesnt have to be millions. People with the money to give should do so or if they want to take a more active role raise the money themselves or go out there themselves and help.
I have spent nearly two years raising money for a trip to Tanzania to help on a project building and renovating a school and it's honestly the hardest work i've ever really done as people just dont seem to want to bother giving (even with the current economical climate this isnt really acceptable when im only ever aksing for a few £s)

Rant over. In summary kid was happy for one day nothing wrong with that.

if you want to help in your own free way then i suggest going here http://www.postpals.co.uk/ sending a sick child a letter or email will really make a difference to them and their lives and its cheap/free

Re: Electron Boy saves the day!

If it was volunteer work then okay.

My thoughts exactly, anyone who goes around lecturing others or complains about how wrong such charities are compared to others but doesn't do any charity work themselves, end up looking like jackasses.

I really don't think this a big deal, the kid has cancer, it was volunteer work, and the charity is over now. And let's be realistic here, they donated how much? Surely not enough to find the cure for cancer. His wish was no more wasteful than the other wishes from Make-A-Wish (like Meet a Celebrity, or a trip to Disney World for example), they give kids the chance to be happy for a day or two, and as mentioned already there are many charities out there that focus on life extension & cures to children with diseases (including ones that come and go every year).

It's not a big deal.
