I think I would wait to have the discussion until after the first date...doing it on the phone as the follow-up to the date would be a good idea or if you know her well enough maybe putting your arm around her and saying something like "so are you my girlfriend now or what" in a flirty kind of way or play it more sensitive and smile and ask if she will be your steady girl.
You need to know in your head what you want to happen with this girl before you ask her out either way because you have to know how to play it. If you are just looking to hit it and quit it then you play the sweet jerk she can't help but like and give it up to

yeah, gay is used as a synonim for dumb or stupid. we all understand how it can be offensive, but the fact is that it's not an attack on homosexuals.

If it's not hurting anybody and we all accept that it's just a slang word and not a hate-crime things would be much easier.
