It's fine if you want to rant, it's not fine to go and contradict yourself.

Lulwot? Do you wear tinfoil on your head to keep the CIA from reading your thoughts? I'm just curious since you seem to think people make games to train/brainwash the young. I mean, they do have a ratings system in place for that sort of thing.

What does the ratings system have to do with the fact that theres advertisemenst for said games O.o. And I wasn't talking about SUPER younger generation. But as I grew older, I just kept seeing more and more war/recon/battle type games. Like I said, I'm not totally against them, because I like some, but it seems like that theres all there is really.

And yes..I do have tinfoil on my head! o_o  just kidding. But really. When I look through a GAMING magazine, and I see 5/6 pages dedicated to war games, and then other advertisements on the backs of those pages about the "Army" and the "National Guard" or the "Air Force" I begin to get a little suspicious..*shrug* oh well.

Re: Military shooters are dragging my like of games through a pile of ****

I have to agree with Sephi. I don't think those games are blatently trying to brainwash us, but they certainly try to influence us. Military endorsements and adds going along with such games in magazines and websites and the like only help to support this.

They aren't bad games (except I think Rainbow six sucks... too complicated of controls), but you cannot deny that the military does have a hand in these games for multiple reasons. They use them to train their soldiers, and I also think that they're used to familiarize average people with the concepts and skills required in war.

America is a very war-like country (anyone who denies this is deluding themselves), and also very media based. It makes sense for the military to plant the seeds of war into our youth. But that really isn't the point. These military sims, (not wargames, but sims) are indirectly training us for war. So I can see the OP's point, but none of that means an average person will play a war sim and go throw a grenade through their neighbors window!

Just trying to say that war sims are just that, they simulate war and therefore are indirectly training us. That said, they DO NOT brainwash us or force us to go out and kill people. Although these type of games may influence someone to join the military, it won't make them go out and commit mass murder in the name of war. ;)

Americas Army was created for this purpose as a recruitment idea but it openly says thats what its for and doesnt try to disguise it as it was developed by the United States Army.

Every branch of the military is that way. They are all open about wanting to recruit people. But they also play to the media and video games--both of which are a huge influence on this country.

Re: Military shooters are dragging my like of games through a pile of ****

I like shooters as much as the next gore fan, but I really enjoy adventure and roleplay games more. I have no political opinion on the matter.

Shooter games are very popular with kids and meatheads. There are a few but there's more RPGs and other type games than shooters but again, it's a very popular genre with the casuals and mainstream gamers. Probably because the army is always recruiting and what better place to try and garner more recruits than in a gaming magazine that depicts games that glorify war?

You need to list some of these "war sims" because just about every shooter out there is unrealistic. But yes, of course they're going to influence some people to want to join the military. Movies, T.V. shows, etc. have the same effect. Some people might watch COPS and want to be a cop, some people might watch a show about comedians and want to be a comedian.

Actually, video games aren't that influential. I'm willing to bet that more than half the people in the U.S. still don't know anything about video games (especially the mainstream gamers).

Grim, you're a buffoon if you think ratings mean anything now a days. Modern Warfare 2 is rated M, guess what? 90% of the players are under the age of 15. Try to make a logical point next time please, I agree with Sephi in the sense that ratings don't make anything but I also agree with you that they aren't brainwashing anyone, that's just using the video game as an excuse. Nobody is being forced to join the army, yes war like video games do encourage younger ones to join cause they think it's going to be all "I get to shoot lots of people with no consequences and a respawn whenever I die." but it's their choice to join. They aren't being brain washed, this country has a history of going to war and kicking ass with the exception of Vietnam and the Iraq "War" now a days, we played it like frenchies in both of those, so if anything, the history of the country would encourage them just as much as a video game.

To be honest, Halo and Left 4 Dead are far from "unrealistic", it's only unrealistic in the sense that it's in the future. Nobody knows for certain if zombies can happen - the chances are obviously like 0.01 but who knows? Halo isn't unrealistic at all, it's just futuristic. It's the same as Modern Warfare 2, you're still killing people but with future technology and aliens. So you can't really use those as a scapegoat and say you don't like modern or historic shooters but "unrealistic" aka futuristic is fine.

Look here, I never said ratings meant anything. In fact, I explicitly stated that ratings do nothing for anyone because parents just buy their kids the game without asking what kind of game it is. Their little brat whines and whines until they give in anyways.

Did I ever mention I'm secretly a space overlord named Zog? My army of zombie aliens are preparing to attack planet Earth any day now.

There isnt any need for name calling or digging at people for their opinion, your just going to cause problems with talk like that. Ratings are there because they have to be there, they are a guideline for how old you have to be to purchase the game not play it. If a parent purchases the game for their underage child then thats their call. The games put the age guideline there and they have ignored it so on their head be it. As i said my parents always purchased games for me when i was younger and some were 18 rated, they did this because they deemed me mature enough to deal with the content. Plus at the time my dad was a keen gamer so he knew what to expect from the games, most parents do not.

I wasn't exactly saying a zombie virus is possible, but something similar could be, a virus that mutates and causes cannibalism perhaps would practically be a zombie outbreak, no? To the alien - you're right, I guess there's this whole universe and galaxies and we are the only planet that contains life forms.

You're right, sorry. But I guess that goes for the post above yours too, then?

Exactly. My parents STILL check into games/movies before I can get them. I've talked to 6 year olds who just asked their parents to pick it up for them and they did.

Re: Military shooters are dragging my like of games through a pile of ****

Actually, video games aren't that influential. I'm willing to bet that more than half the people in the U.S. still don't know anything about video games (especially the mainstream gamers).

You need to wake up. Here are the percentages: In 2008, a report from the NPD group, a New York-based market research firm, revealed that 72 percent of the U.S. population played video games the prior year, up from 64 percent in 2006. And the number is rising still, every year.

Video games are as main stream as music and television, and they are just one of many media forms to take hold of our society in a very impacting way. Believe me, if the government gets a chance to influence the youth of our nation, they will. And it’s usually in a subtle way. I agree that games don’t brainwash people into joining the military, but they sure as hell make the military recruiters’ jobs easier.

The Media is powerful and it has a hold on about every form of technology that has come along, altering it and adding to it so that people will conform to its ideas. Why is it that every girl feels like she’s not pretty enough, that she needs the newest shoes, clothing and makeup? They compare themselves to airbrushed models and celebrities, which makes them unhappy with their own bodies and their own lives. And girls are not the only ones affected, everyone is, is some way or another.

I love shooting games just as much as the next person, but these games glamorize war and make it look pretty damn exciting. Stats show that more and more people play these games each year. And it’s not just the games that influence us. Magazine ads, and what about those awe-inspiring commercials on TV that make you want to go kick some ass as The Few and The Proud?

Seriously, it’s like this whole country is asleep, and they just carry on with their lives somehow, without actually being aware of all the things that go on in the world. People are jaded. There’s really not much hope for us.

First of all, I want some actual proof of that not just you telling me this. Also, who says they're a credible source? And besides, most of the so-called "gamers" are into crap like Rock Band and Dance Dance Revolution. You cut those posers out and that percentage drops dramatically. Not to mention it's best to leave out the Halo and Call of Duty fanboys. They're most likely meatheads who were rejected by the military and thus resort to that to get their kicks.

Honestly, I think you've been watching way too many movies. We're all quite aware of the impact they have on some of us but the rest of us aren't that shallow or gullible. Sure, they glamorize warfare and such but unless you're mentally unstable you know the difference between reality and a game and know that war in a game is nothing like the real thing.

Girls are born materialistic and they just want the next best thing to make them popular amongst the other gals. Not entirely sure what that has to do with anything though.

Re: Military shooters are dragging my like of games through a pile of ****

Games like CoD or Battle Field are hardly a simulation. Sure they're a dramatisation of what a real soldier goes through, which is almost always a terrible experience. But that's what games are about: escaping into a fantasy world. Games like that are (for me at least) fun to play, and I, like most other gamers, know better than to believe that it is anything more than fiction.

Even if they’re not a credible source, many other sources have said something similar if not exactly the same. All you have to do is Google search “What percentage of Americans plays video games” and pages of articles will come up. You make a valid point that not all gamers play the violent games, however a large percentage of kids and teens do. FPS’s like Call of Duty and Halo are growing in popularity, and most kids want to play these, because most of the other **** out there is lame. It isn’t really a huge percentage drop when you take away the Rock Band/Guitar Hero/etc players. And I doubt the people playing Halo and CoD are what you say. When I play online it’s always kids, teens, college students, and perhaps a few 40 year olds that still live with their moms.

Yeah, I do watch a lot of movies. That doesn’t affect my view on this. I’m coming from a logical standpoint. I don’t get how you can sit there and say that only some of us are affected by media, but most of us are not. It’s the complete opposite. Our whole society has been corrupted and transformed in sickening ways because of the media, and nearly all of us are affected in some way. Yeah, every sane person knows the difference between real life and a game, but years of playing these games can definitely influence a young mind in some way. There are many articles on this as well.

Girls are not born materialistic. That’s politically incorrect, and I think girls would be offended if they read that. There are a lot of materialistic girls, but it’s mainly because the media paints women in a false, overly-beautiful way to get people to buy certain products. Those images impact young girls from the start, and for the rest of their lives. Once again, there are countless articles reinforcing this belief, including psychologists, PhDs, and other reliable sources, along with more statistics, which I know you love (:

First and foremost, how can those tests even be remotely accurate? I'm an American yet I was never asked if I played games or not. I know many others who play games but don't get asked questions like that. Those tests probably test a handful of people and then group everyone else in there but why would we not believe them? I mean they are "scientists" after all. Yes, a large percentage of them play those games because a large percentage of games ARE violent war games. In fact, I think the only games that aren't, are racing games and games like Bejeweled or The Sims and make up less than one percent of all the games out there.

The complete opposite would be most of us are affected by the media while some of us are not. You SHOULD have said that it was wrong and that we're all affected by the media but of course, that would be wrong. I've been playing video games since I was two years old and they've never had any effect on me. Events like the Colombine Massacre were not because of any video games, it's because these people are mentally unstable. If you give them an outlet to a world that has no limits and no repercussions, it's no wonder they fell deeper down the rabbit hole. Still, the games aren't to blame but rather the parents, the classmates, etc. who failed to realize just how ****ed up these kids were. They came with plenty of warning signs but people chose to remain ignorant.

Politically incorrect? Well, good thing I don't care about politics, haha. You don't think girls are born materialistic? Well, then I'd have to say you've never met a girl before. Are you telling me because I see a man on T.V. who looks better than me and cooler than me advertising a product that I care nothing about, that I'll be inclined to buy the product based solely on that? I think not. Women are the same way and just because a few gals are mentally weak does not mean they all are. They don't give into to products just because a beautiful woman is advertising it. They do it because they are genuinely materialistic. There's probably less than a hundred gals out there who are not materialistic and that's just a poorly educated guess because every one I've met is extremely vain and materialistic.

Mainstream gamers are like casual gamers, only worse. They're the people who have never played any games in their life until some form of media shows an ad about a game that everyone claims to be super awesome. They only get into it because others are into it and they follow that with every game they get.

I'm sorry if I don't include or group the posers and wannabes with people like myself. Their opinions are biased and whacked so it's only natural that I exclude them. I said the CoD/Halo fanboys. You know, the ones who sit there playing nothing BUT those games and refuse to give anything else a try.

You just admitted that most games are violent, and I already said these games don’t cause people to commit acts of violence in the real world. The studies don’t even have to be accurate; we can see that all around us people are playing these games. Millions of copies are sold. These are the games that everyone is drawn to. You don’t need statistics to prove this. And we do have enough ways to establish some pretty solid facts with considerable accuracy. For example, highs schools and colleges have been reviewed. Around 40% of college students play games, compared to around a staggering 80% or higher for high school students. It has also been proven that these games lead to kids being much more aggressive than the average student, and not to mention the lower grade point average. You don’t want to believe that any of these things can be proved, but they can and have been.

Yes, that’s what I’m saying; most of us are affected by the media while some are not. You believe that games have had no affect on you, but you wouldn’t notice the changes anyway. It’s so subtle, so gradual, that you would never see a change in yourself. But the truth is, if you do anything for that long and it’s a huge part of your life and who you are, it will ultimately change you.

Your view of women is wrong man. I don’t know what happened in your life to cause you to think that way. Women are equal to men and none of us are born that way. I’ve met plenty of girls that are non-materialistic, and those tend to be the girls I like more. And I’m saying that the majority of Americans feel like they need to live up to certain standards, put forth by the media and social pressure. It affects girls more I’m sure, and you obviously don’t seem like the type to be affected by it. Neither am I, but it’s not just appearance that they affect, it’s just about everything in our lives.
