Sorry, but I just don't think that people "not being assholes" is as easy as you think. Otherwise, they wouldn't be assholes. I mean, (almost) everyone who's busy being an asshole is firmly convinced the OTHER person is the asshole in any given situation.
I don't know-- it sounds like circular reasoning. Do you frequently feel the need to tell people how modest you are? But I just don't think anyone can really be objective about themselves. They always think they're better or worse than they actually are.

If you think you're actually objective about yourself, my immediate accusation would be narcissism. Or maybe arrogance. I don't know, but I strongly suspect that no one is actually objective about themselves.
I could be wrong. (And no, I'm not really calling you narcissistic or arrogant. Maybe... over-confident? I'm not trying to be insulting here, it just doesn't seem like anyone can really judge themselves objectively. That's kinda the opposite of what the word "objective" means.)
Most people feel fine, mean well. That doesn't mean they actually do good. Which, yeah, sucks. But people can think they're decent and fair and still perform atrocities.
