My buddy is looking to buy a good gaming laptop. his budget is $500-$800 max.
He lives in the middle of no-where and has asked me for help. I know near to nothing about PC gaming.
Is there any thing in a laptop that is a must have for this sort of thing?
any other suggestions? What things to look for/stay way from?

Seriously, for the price of a "decent" gaming laptop you can get one "helluva" stationary PC.
 
Yeah, but that added mobility sure would be lovely.

Never saw a good gaming laptop go for under $800 unless it was refurbished (or an owner who was dumb enough to sell it that low or wants to scam) and that much money for a refurb' isn't even worth it.

You can have a go at www.Newegg.com and look there, but he's better off with a custom-built desktop if he's not going to be moving around a lot, better bang for the buck. Not to mention, upgrading will be less costly.. if you want to upgrade most laptops (namely the GPU) you'll have to buy a whole new laptop for that unless your friend likes to perform open heart surgery on electronics. Not a good investment.

...Waste of money. Besides, from what I hear the batteries don't last very long at all. They're hardly mobile.

You'd have better luck finding a new Ferrari with the budget of a second-hand Mondeo. Not happening, bud. For any money, all gaming laptops tend to be terrible.

However for that you could build yourself a fairly decent PC that could run just about any game released today at respectable settings and better than a console.
 
You won't get anything decent for $800. You just can't. $1000 would give you a bit more wiggle room, but it still wouldn't offer the UMPH that a PC can offer. Even a $800 PC won't quite reach 'good' standards. I recommend bumping that budget to $1000, get a PC, or not even bother.
 
Ok. Ive told him not to bother with a laptop and just get a PC. Ive also been told by another friend of mine that its cheaper to buy a ****ty one then just upgrade it with what you want.
 
It's even cheaper to just build it from scratch.

You can make a seriously good rig for a reasonable price. Parts such as a 6770 and GTX 560 are reasonable prices and still preform above par on modern games. If he really is considering pc gaming, i would advise building from scratch.
 
I have me a GTX 560 Ti, runs Skyrim at ultra settings with the high res texture back, 50-60fps constant.

Yes, perhaps around that price range of $800. My Asus G73SW cost me $1940/€1550 and its battery lasts quite long - 4 hours in fact. It's an 8-cell Lithium-Ion battery.

Ultimately, if you want something decent for gaming on a laptop, and as aforementioned by others here, you're looking at at least a price around €950/$1200.

4 hours playing games? Damn.
 
I very highly doubt it can last 4 hours playing games.
